Making an Argument in Academic Writing

In writing academic literature, it is very common to propose an argument. This argument could be in the position of agreeing with other people statement or disagree with it.. Either way the basic idea in stating an argument is how to have your proposition to be accepted in term of academic and to show how it can be useful and practical in society. To convince the reader and give our argument a meaning, we could organize our argument by utilizing collocation such as:

  • make reference to
  • draw a distinction between
  • raises important questions
  • taking it into consideration
  • argues convicingly
and many other example.
In stating an argument we usually use some of the collocations for a specific purpose. collocatiob such as "draws an analogy" is usually used to makes a comparison between things which have similar features to explain or simplify complex idea. We could use "puts forward the argument" to stress out that the author of the works made an statement about his or her research that shows some evidence or result of the work. To express the most important idea of the work we could use "the writer briefly summarises" then followed by a sentence that explain the whole idea of the work. At the time we feel we have a different opinion than the writer or disagree with the writer's statement we could use word like "disagrees profoundly"  to express our disagreement towards the writer's statement.

Below is some example of the arguments in the academic writing:

1. This paper presents the case for the complete revision of the theory

2. The writer draws some interesting parallels between life now and life in the Middle Ages.

3.He draws attention to recent research which, he claims, lend support for his argument.

4.The author of the books adopts an usual position on the topic

5.He also makes no reference to the important work of Potter and Sinclair in this field.

6.Recent research suggest that Jackson's theory of economic development is flawed

7.I hold firmly to my belief in the importance of basic human rights.

8. Wastov lay emphasis on examining the vital first three years of a child's development

9. But we need to take into consideration the economic history of Latin America.

10. Many studies have attempted to assess the significance of diet in the prevention of cancer
